While Darwin itself is brimming with natural wonders and cultural experiences, some of the Northern Territory’s most mind-blowing attractions lie just beyond the city limits. From wetland cruises to aboriginal rock art, here are five unique day trips that deserve a spot on your next Darwin itinerary.
- Litchfield National Park – Just 1.5 hours from Darwin’s CBD, Litchfield National Park offers the ultimate outdoor experience. Explore Florence Falls, hike through giant termite mounds, cool off in the Buley rockholes, and keep an eye out for hopping wallabies. Whilst there, don’t miss the Wangi Falls area with its large swimming hole surrounded by tall rocks – it’s one of Litchfield’s most picturesque spots.
- Adelaide River Cruises – Get up close to Darwin’s large crocodiles on an Adelaide River cruise. These incredible boat tours let you witness huge crocs being fed by experienced handlers right in front of you. You may also spot birds like sea eagles circling when experiencing this river adventure.
- Kakadu National Park – A 3-hour drive will lead you to the many wonders of the Kakadu National Park. Explore ancient Aboriginal rock art dating back thousands of years at sites like Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock. Cool off with a dip at Gunlom Falls, spot crocodiles on Yellow Water Billabong, and be awed by the rugged beauty of this World Heritage site.
- Tiwi Islands – Take a morning ferry from Darwin to discover the unique indigenous culture and traditions of the Tiwi Islands. You can join the local Tiwi people to learn about their art, dancing, hunting practices and the Pukamani (death) Ceremony. It’s an eye-opening day trip experience that we highly recommend.
- Mary River Wetlands – The Mary River region east of Darwin is home to some of the most prolific wetlands and wildlife in the whole of the Territory. Take an airboat or cruise, and glide through the paperbark forests and spot many different kinds of wildlife, including crocodiles, sharks and enormous colonies of birds. There is even a possibility of spotting wild buffalo roaming as well.
No matter which day trip you choose, each offers a vastly different yet equally enthralling perspective on the Northern Territory’s breathtaking landscapes and aboriginal culture. You don’t want to leave Darwin without venturing out to experience one of these iconic attractions.
