While Darwin’s coastal areas are a paradise, there are some important things to consider before taking a dip. One of the biggest risks during stinger season (typically October to May/June) is venomous marine stingers like box jellyfish and Irukanji jellyfish that can deliver extremely painful and potentially fatal stings. Only swim inside stinger enclosures during these months and if you do feel like venturing beyond the safety netting, be sure to make yourself familiar with vinegar stations.
Darwin is also home to crocodiles that inhabit many waterways and can potentially be found in the ocean. Avoid swimming at dawn, dusk or night, skip creek and river areas, and stick to designated public beaches checked for croc safety.
Even strong swimmers need to beware of powerful rips, currents and tides at our beaches. Only swim at patrolled locations, check condition reports, and never swim alone or under the influence. You’ll also want to watch out for poisonous sea creatures like the cone shell and stonefish.
By understanding the risks and following beach safety advice like checking signage, you can safely soak up our spectacular coastal scenery.
Once you have found the safe spots, Darwin is a beautiful place to swim and with year round warm weather, taking a dip is always a great idea.
